kneeling before thee is supplication is about a man, his prayers, and the wish to preserve moments before they are lost or damaged. The white delicate veil establishes the formal structure of three elements: the photograph of the man, a closed pocket mirror, and a prayer card of the Virgin Mary. The veil, traditionally associated with new beginnings and deep mourning, depicts an angel playing the trumpet, who validates the man’s prayers. The hand mirror is closed, never revealing any deeper truths than the one presented before us, while the prayer card holds the man’s prayers which have remained untouched. This piece reflects the distance from an unknowable history and the desire for nostalgia, one that leaves much mystery and grieving.
